ABOUT THE FORT DE BRÉGANÇON
Located in the commune of Bormes-les-Mimosas, the Fort de Brégançon stands on a rocky peak about thirty meters high. As a strategic site, it overlooks the bays of Hyères and Toulon while being sheltered from the eastern wind.
In 1964, the President of the Republic stayed at the fort during the commemorations of the Provence landings. The fort and the islet were classified as historical monuments on September 25, 1968, and were designated a presidential residence.
While keeping the fort accessible to the French public, Emmanuel Macron has chosen to regularly reactivate it, especially during summer stays — which are both family retreats and opportunities for work meetings. Notable examples include the visit of British Prime Minister Theresa May in August 2018, Russian President Vladimir Putin in August 2019 on the eve of the G7 in Biarritz, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the summer of 2020.
